Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Resurfacing
How long is the recovery period?
Recovery varies by individual, but typically, you can expect:
- 3-5 days of redness and mild swelling
- Light peeling or flaking for about a week
- Some bronzing of the skin that fades within 2 weeks
- Return to normal activities within a few days
- Full results becoming visible over 2-3 months
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies from patient to patient, and each session is spaced 4-6 weeks apart. However, the exact number depends on your skin condition and goals. During your consultation, Dr. Geronemus will create a customized treatment plan based on your specific needs.
Are the results permanent?
While Fraxel treatment creates lasting improvements in skin quality, your skin continues to age naturally. Many patients choose to have maintenance treatments every 1-2 years to preserve their results. Protecting your skin from sun damage and following a good skincare routine will help maintain your results longer.
Who is a good candidate for Fraxel treatment?
Most people concerned with skin aging, scarring, or sun damage are good candidates for Fraxel. However, treatment might not be recommended if you:
- Are pregnant or nursing
- Have active acne or skin infections
- Have a history of keloid scarring
- Are taking certain medications
- Have had recent sun exposure
A consultation with Dr. Geronemus will determine if Fraxel is right for you.
How should I prepare for my Fraxel treatment?
For optimal results:
- Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks before treatment
- Stop using retinoids and other aggressive skincare products as directed
- Arrive with clean skin free of makeup
- Plan for some social downtime after treatment
- Arrange transportation home if you'll be using anti-anxiety medication
