Port Wine Birthmark Success Stories
My granddaughter was born with a birthmark on her face, her eye, nose and lip. I took her to Dr. Geronemus when she was only one week of age and he treated her. The treatment was very quick and my granddaughter didn’t seem to be bothered by the treatment. She cried for a second and then she was fine. We returned to Dr. Geronemus 4 weeks later for a second treatment and just one week following her birthmark is completely gone. We were so pleased with this treatment and the staff couldn’t have been nicer. Dr. Geronemus is amazing.

I have been a patient of Dr Geronemus since the late 80s, and he is simply amazing. I have very extensive Port Wine Stains and Dr G always has the most recent and effective lasers available. He is attentive, kind and always open to discuss treatment and the most impressive results. His staff is equally attentive and most kind.

I started treatment for my 15 month old daughter in May 2022. The office is very clean and staff kind, empathetic and professional. I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes to go into a private room. After the initial consultation with Dr. Geronemus, I didn’t realize he is the actual Doctor to perform every session as I had assumed one of his associates would be doing some of the work. Today I went to my 6th session and Dr. Geronemus was there and has been there every step of the way. He asks at the beginning of the appointment how she is doing and how she is healing after the laser. The results seem to be different for every patient. We have seen definite improvement although it is very gradual for now. We knew from the beginning that for our particular case would be at least 20 sessions. We were informed this at the consultation even before committing to the program. I am very grateful to this center and Dr. Geronemus as many laser centers will not treat babies as they are inexperienced or do not have the equipment. This place definitely has an infinite amount of experience with infants, babies and toddlers and I am lucky to have them within driving distance from NJ.

Not only is he a preeeminent leader and pioneer in the field, but he shares his expertise across the world and devotes his time to compassionate causes. It should be no surprise that every member of his staff makes your visit a delight… This level of professionalism and human-centered care can only be attributed to the model high standards set by Dr. Geronemus. Yes. I said ‘delight’ and ‘doctor visit’ in the same paragraph.

Frequently asked questions
At what age should treatment begin?
Early intervention is key for optimal results. Dr. Geronemus's groundbreaking research has shown that beginning treatment in early infancy can lead to significant improvement within just two months. However, everyone can benefit from the treatment regardless of age. Dr. Geronemus treats patients of all ages, from day-old infants through toddlers and adults.
Is the treatment painful?
Our advanced laser treatments are designed to be as comfortable as possible. Many patients, particularly infants, tolerate the procedure well. Parents often report that their children describe the sensation as "tickling." We take extra care to ensure comfort throughout the procedure, especially for our youngest patients.
What should we expect after each treatment?
Most patients experience some redness and mild swelling in the treated area, which typically subsides within a few days. We'll provide detailed aftercare instructions and are always available to address any concerns that arise between treatments.
Does insurance cover treatment?
Coverage varies by insurance provider and policy. Our staff is experienced in working with insurance companies and can help guide you through the process. We also offer the Dr. Roy G. Geronemus Humanitarian Scholarship program for eligible patients.
What are Dr. Geronemus’ qualifications?
Dr. Roy G. Geronemus is a nationally recognized dermatologic surgeon and laser specialist who was instrumental in developing the Vbeam laser, a groundbreaking technology for treating port-wine birthmarks (PWB). His research demonstrated that once-weekly pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatments could achieve near-total or total clearance in 70% of infants after just two months. As a board member of the Vascular Birthmark Association and creator of the Dr. Roy G. Geronemus Humanitarian Scholarship, he continues to advance the field of port wine birthmark treatment through innovative research, collaborative efforts with medical professionals, and a patient-centered approach to treating complex vascular conditions.
What is the treatment outlook?
Dr. Geronemus completes the treatment himself with topical, local, or no anesthesia, depending on the patient. He recommends beginning the treatment in early infancy to achieve the best possible results. In most cases, multiple treatments are required, and although you will be able to see results, a complete cure is not always possible. The number and frequency of treatments will depend on several factors, such as diagnosis, birthmark location, and the patient's age.
